My
approach to therapy
I strive to build a therapeutic relationship with my
client in order to assist with containing the personal
distress and suffering that may be caused by various
difficulties experienced through relationships, life
stages, stressors and changes.
Having
spent a number of years employed by mental health care
facilities I practice from a solid base of teaching and
supervision, and the additional opportunity to have
worked psychotherapeutically with children has informed
my essentially developmental approach to understanding
the human psyche. In this respect, I work from the
understanding that early life experiences colour our
subsequent perceptions of ourselves and our world. To
varying degrees, these perceptions may present as
obstacles that prevent us from reaching our full
potential.
Previously trained as an artist, and inline with Jungian
psychology, I am interested in the value of imagery.
Whether arising through dreams, fantasy, play or
art-making, images and the creative use of imagination
present a powerful way to access our inner world in
order to work towards healing and wholeness. Although my
principal orientation is psychoanalytic and based on the
assumption that much of our conscious behaviour is
influenced by factors outside of our immediate
awareness, I find it useful to incorporate other
treatment modalities such as Mindfulness, Attachment
Theory and Cognitive Behavioural strategies, depending
on the particular needs of the client. I also have a
developing interest in the use of body-centered
approaches such as Somatic Experiencing and Polyvagal
Theory for working with trauma and emotional regulation.
